Sometimes I wonder why I was born with the gift to see and communicate with spirits. I have had this ability as long as I could remember and the aforementioned question has always plagued my mind. Out of the billions of people in the world, why I was one of the "chosen ones".

Before I found Paganism I truly viewed my ability as a curse because:

• seeing spirits scared me to death,
• people viewed me as insane since I could see and hear things they couldn't, and 
• after listening to the majority for so long, started to believe everyone and I felt that I was insane as well.

But lucky for me, I found the Path of the Wise and that is when I realized that what I have is a gift, not a curse. Through my teachings of Wicca and other Pagan traditions I learned that the realm of spirit is not one to be feared but embraced. Now that I have learned to accept my gift, I have helped so many people connect with their departed loved ones and that makes me feel very special and noble.

But even though I have learned to love my psychic ability, the big question still haunts (no pun intended)  me: Why was I born with this? Here are my theories about it:

1. I was born on Samhain (Halloween) and any Witch knows that Samhain is a time that the veil between the living world and the spirit world is at it's thinnest. And on that night, spirits walk among us. Was I born on this day because of fate? Was I meant to be a Witch that can communicate with spirits since I was born on the holiest of days? I was also born at 12:39 am, which is within Witching Hour. All coincidence? I think not....

2. Perhaps my disability is the reason I see spirits. I developed scoliosis at the age of 8...right before I remember seeing my first ghost. And as you might know, the shaman or wise woman of any given tribe is usually elderly or disabled. See, when you lose one of you physical senses or you are not able to do a lot of physical activities due to a disability, your psychic senses start to take the place of that which was lost. And since the elderly or disabled members of a tribe was not able to contribute to that tribe, they usually became very psychic, thus becoming shaman. Perhaps this has happened to me too.

3. My gift is hereditary. This theory never did cross my mind until a few months ago when my father admitted to me that he sees spirits as well. This piece of information shocked me entirely because my dad is very scientific and is an atheist as well. He always poked fun at me when I told him my experiences. So yes....it was a real shocker to me to find out that my dad sees them too. And now that my daughter is old enough to fully communicate with me, she has informed me that she too sees spirits. So is my gift a family linage that will pass down through the generations? I certainly hope so.

I would love to know any thoughts about my theories. I'm all ears.....................

Ah, the old "Nature VS Nurture" debate...gotta love it..hehe...When you get into the finer details of the debate. it can drive you nuts...lol. On one hand, your abilities definitley do not originate or are controlled by either your physical body or conscious mind...agreed? But proof for it being hereditary is indisputable, if we factor in your father's ability. I sometimes wonder if we carry our gifts with us from one lifetime to the next or if we have them in just a few as a means of learning and understanding about that aspect of our being. Hmmmm, always love stimulating those little gray cells. I can remember talking to my great-grandparents when I was a teenager. I could see them plain as day, and I could here them. We would have entire conversations, though they died when I was just a little girl. One in particular, Pa, comes to mind. When I was just little, he and I would sit away from everyone else, drink tea, and talk. This happened often enough. Was I really seeing them as I teenager? I believe so.

Anyways, I love the look you have going on here- and that's an amazing gift you have there... I've been developing mine over the past 2 years (still pretty new to it all). Interesting theories you have for it as well and as I was reading them, I couldn't help but wonder if all of your theories are your answer.
